In Black and White

It only took 9 months after the finalization, but my son's birth certificate finally came in the mail.  Right there in black and white is his name, my name, and my husband's name.  There is no mention of his other mother or father (of course, he wouldn't be there anyway because she chose to not name him).  There really isn't much on the page.  It names the doctor, where he was born, and who is parents are.

Then again, does it?  It says "Mother" and "Father."  I have to say that I am relieved it didn't say "Born to (insert my name here)."  However, I wish it would have said "Mother", "Father," "Adoptive Mother," and "Adoptive Father."  No, I don't devalue my role in his life right now, but I value the role his other mother will always have in his life.  For such a big piece of paper, it sure seems like there are too many empty spaces.

I'm grateful that his mother still wants to be in his life so at least if it's not written on the page, there's still a way for him to know and fill in those empty spaces.
